The official language of the island is English, but Mauritians practice in daily life, Creole and French. The English is used in the administration.

Currency
The currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). One euro is worth about 37 rupees.
Credit cards, MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Diners and Travelers Cheques are accepted in hotels and department stores.
ATMs are available in all major conurbations. Banks are open from 9 am to 15 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 17 pm Friday.
Tipping is at the discretion of the customer.

Move on up
Taxis operate a European tariff. To cross the island from south to north, starting 50 euros.
It is possible to rent a vehicle, the day, unlimited mileage for the same amount. When renting, the French license is accepted. However in case of accident, an international license will be required.
Also possibility of renting two wheels, between 20 euros and 30 euros per day.
Driving is left on relatively good roads. Speed limit 24.85 mph in the city and 49.71 mph on roads. Caution on small roads on the island. They are never very large, sometimes full of holes.
